How to Calculate the Force to Bend Metal Sciencing

Metal is bent to make various products, fixtures and machinery. In fact, industrial and factory machinery often incorporate metal bending processes as a function of manufacturing. This bending and shaping is done according to designs and specifications where the machinery doing the bending must be programmed to apply the correct bending force.

How to Bend Stainless Steel Sheets Hunker

How to Bend Stainless Steel Sheets. As you bend a stainless steel sheet the bend area cold hardens, increasing the amount of pressure required to finish the bend. This makes bending stainless steel with common hand tools difficult and a sheet metal brake is often required, although one technique to bend stainless steel using hand tools works well on shorter length bends.

Minimum Recommended Bend Radius Chart from American ...

Minimum Bend Radii The minimum bend radius data shown in these charts is measured to the inside of the bend. The bend radii listed are standard minimum if manufacturing for aircraft and aerospace applications. Since commercial sheet metal bending can be done with less concern for stresses caused during forming operation, the radius can be near zero for thin sheet metal.

RCU Forums - Bending Aluminum. Heat? No Heat?

Jan 22, 2013 · You can NOT bend a sharp 90 degree angle or the aluminum will crack and break. Heat will help, but it will also weaken the metal. Put one end of the aluminum in a vise and use a piece of 1/4" black pipe or a 1/2 bolt to bend the aluminum around to achieve your angle without trying to force the metal into a sharp 90degree bend.
