Hi, Welcome to Just Answer, I am Clayton. I can help you with this. The only other way to prime that engine is with pressurized fuel. You have to pump the pump over 150 times. At the dealership, we use 2 types of tools to prime the engine after a filter change. We used a modified bug sprayer that you get at your local hardware store, with a compuchek fitting and a hose long enough to reach the truck. You fill the bug sprayer about 1/2-3/4 up with fuel, pump it up a bunch, then if you added a valve to the hose, open the valve and that forces the fuel in the fuel system. Let it build pressure, than crank the engine. DO NOT USE ETHER!!! Detroit has a special tool for the DD series engines that is called a ESOC, it does the exact same thing, but it does work better. We used the bug spray for a long time to get the DD engines started till our ESOC got repaired. Do not keep cranking and cranking the engine, if it cranks more than 5 seconds, stop, then pump up the bug sprayer some more, then repeat. Once it is started, let it idle for a couple of minutes, then take it for a road test around the block. This is to make sure all of the air is out of the system. If it does not start after the filter change, then you could have cut an o-ring on one of the caps, or the filter is not seated all the way. Also, be sure to use Detroit fuel filters, and not aftermarket. We have had lots of trucks come to the shop with aftermarket filters that are having hard to start issues.Pumping it up can be done, but it takes a lot of pumping, like I said its over 150 times, the bug sprayer works great. The injectors in these engines have very tight tolerances, and the fuel pumps are lubed, and cooled by fuel. Word of advice, do not run it out of fuel.Here is the last replay regarding this question. DD15 fuel pressure does not stay.What could be the problem?

There could be a few problems here. When it starts and runs, look at the big fuel filter mounted on the frame rail, if you see lots of consistant bubbles, its sucking air on the suction side. IF this is the case, by pass the suction side and run it the fuel into a bucket and check your fuel pressure again.

We usually check the pressure at the priming port, you should get 90-110 psi at 1800 rpm there with no fluctuation. Around 75-80 at idle. Since it is hard to start after 3 hours, there are a couple of other possibilities. There is a 2 stage valve located on the high pressure pump. Also, in the high pressure manifold, there is a doser pressure regulator. Both of these can cause a hard start or a no start issue if they are stuck open. I have seen injectors cause hard to start issues on these engines. Be careful, if you have a leaking injector, the engine can run away AND/OR run backwards. If you suspect a leaking injector, remove the EGR HOT pipe and check for large amounts of fuel. If you see this, STOP cranking on it, and remove the injectors. I suspect you are using DDRS because you are able to monitor the pressure at the rail Why did you change the fuel filter module?Check air in the suction line. I had a truck last week that people threw tons of parts at it, nobody checked air in the suction. If you looked at the fuel filter, it was bubbling like crazy. I found the priming port on the fuel filter housing(if equipped) was sucking air, I removed the priming port, and put a 1/4 inch pipe plug in its place, problem was solved. Pressure would not get over 85 psi at 1800 rpm with a brand new pump and filters, I am usually the one that has to follow people up and figure it out if nobody else can. I am glad it was under warranty for the customers sake. The doser pressure regulator valve is in the high pressure flange, you have to use a 6mm allen to remove it. It faces towards the back of the engine on the high pressure flange. This is another valve that can cause REGEN and hard start problems. Dont forget external fuel leaks, we have a pressure regulator that screws into the suction side of the fuel filter module to pressure up the low pressure side, then we spray all the fittings with soap to look for leaks.I would say after 5-6 turns is okay, it might still have a little bit of air in it. You might want to drive it hard then try it again. Sounds like you fixed the problem.
