Jun 11, 2014 · Thanks for the info. The application is for rollers to go along an I beam for a rack & pinion chair lift, or stair lift. The rollers are about 2" diam, 1" long with 0.75" hole. My reason for choosing 4140 is only that it is the only high carbon steel readily available as offcuts at a local metal merchant. The original rollers were too hard to file.

But at that hardness the Part is susceptible to cracking. He recommended around 45 RC max. 4140 and 4340 are probably close. It’s not a case type of steel.
